This is a portfolio of my signature work. Each mosaic has been made with sawn sticks and logs, gathered from a variety of different trees local to where I live. I never cut down a tree, using natural wood-fall or the byproduct of felling activity to add to my palette of tree pieces.
I do a lot of sawing. That’s a big part of the work – and sometimes the art – of making my wood mosaics. However, every piece I cut is, of course, unique. For me, that’s the beauty of working with natural materials (half the art’s done before I even think about the arrangement), and I’m most often inspired by the wood itself (rather than any genre of art or artist).
The subject matter is wide ranging and diverse, often carefully linked to the material used in a piece. However, in a world where we’re increasingly distancing ourselves from the natural world, my wood mosaics are, above all else, an exercise in reversing that trend – and an effort to install a little natural wonder in our less natural spaces.
